Who is eligible to join CAP?

Any person who has received his/her Canadian citizenship within the last 365 days and is 18 years of age or older is eligible. Each eligible adult should register for his/her very own CAP membership card. Children (17 years of age or younger) can participate in the program by accompanying a CAP member (who is his/her parent); they are not eligible for their own card.

How do I register for a CAP?

You register online by clicking here.

How many people can use my CAP to get free admission?

A Cultural Access Pass grants admission to you, the pass holder, and up to four (4) of your minor, dependent children (17 years of age or under). CAP is not transferable. Your pass can only be used by you – it does not cover your spouse or other adult family and friends.

How much does CAP cost? Are there any fees?

Joining CAP is free and using your membership card grants you free general admission to participating attractions and discounts on travel, but it may not be valid for special presentations and events, parking and separately priced exhibitions and programs. For more information, please read the program's terms and conditions.

Will my CAP expire?

Yes. Your Cultural Access Pass is valid for one year from the date you are sworn in as a citizen – not the date you register for the program. The expiry date is printed on your card. Please note: CAP's one year eligibility cannot be extended under any circumstance.

Can I use my CAP membership card more than once?

Yes. We want you to use your CAP card often! Visit as many different CAP attractions as you want and/or visit the same CAP attraction multiple times and on separate days until your CAP expires (the expiry date is printed on your card). Click here for a list of attractions to visit. Note: VIA Rail's offer to CAP members can only be redeemed once.

Does my one year eligibility start when I register for CAP?

No. The Cultural Access Pass is valid for one year from the date you are sworn in as citizen – not the date you register for the pass (which is why we encourage our members to register as soon as possible to take full advantage of the program). The pass's one year eligibility cannot be extended under any circumstance.

Can I lend my pass to a spouse, family member or friend?

No. Your pass can only be used by you and you must show your photo ID each time you use it. If your spouse, family member or friend is eligible for the program, encourage them to register for their own CAP membership card.

If I was recently sworn in as a Canadian citizen, but my spouse/partner has not yet received Canadian citizenship, or is already a Canadian citizen, can he/she use my CAP?

No. Your pass can only be used by you and you must show your photo ID each time you use it. If your spouse, family member or friend is eligible for the program, encourage them to register for their own CAP membership card.

My minor, dependent child/children received their Canadian citizenship in the last 365 days; can they apply for their own CAP?

No. Children 17 years and younger cannot apply for their own Cultural Access Pass, but they can accompany their parent/guardian to CAP attractions if the parent/guardian is a CAP member.

Does my pass grant admission to my spouse, partner or friend(s)?

Your spouse/partner/friend(s) are welcome to join you as you explore CAP attractions, but they will be subject to regular admission costs. Your pass only grants admission to its holder (you) and up to four (4) of his/her minor, dependent children (17 years of age or under). If your spouse/partner, family member or friend is eligible for the program, encourage them to register for their own CAP membership card.

Can I use my pass outside of the city I live in?

Yes. The purpose of the pass is to help you explore as much of Canada as possible. You can use your CAP pass at any participating attraction from coast-to-coast-to-coast! Check the list of attractions and start planning your travels using the discounted travel offers available for CAP members from VIA Rail and others.

Does my CAP grant me access to special presentations, events, exhibitions and programs?

It depends on the attraction. Your Cultural Access Pass may not be valid for special presentations and events, parking or separately priced exhibitions or programs. Before visiting the attraction please call ahead to verify what you are eligible for. Don't forget to read your monthly CAP e-newsletter for information on new attractions and special events.

I have registered online, how do I get my CAP pass?

The only way to receive your pass is to visit a designated Pickup Location and have your pass printed for you. Click here for instructions and directions; there are more than 200 Pickup Locations across the country.

Where can I pick up my CAP?

Your Cultural Access Pass can be printed and picked-up at any of the designated Pickup Locations across the country. Pickup Locations are listed on the Pickup Locations page of this website.

There is no designated CAP Pickup Location in my town - what do I do?

Pickup Locations can be found across the country (but unfortunately, not in every town). If there isn't one where you live, we can assure you there is one worth travelling to. You can use your pass the instant you pick it up, so make the most of your trip and visit the attraction the day you get your pass. Check the list of Pickup Locations to plan a trip!

I can't get to a Pickup Location - can my CAP be mailed to me?

No. Your Cultural Access Pass must be picked up in person because you need to provide your registration confirmation number, Citizenship Document and photo ID to verify eligibility. Click here for instructions and directions. But, you can have a friend or family member pick your pass up for you so long as they bring your registration confirmation number, Citizenship Document and a piece of your photo ID.

Can someone pick-up my CAP on my behalf?

Yes! They will need to bring your registration confirmation number, Citizenship Document and a piece of your photo ID.

What do I need in order to pick-up my CAP?

You will need the following three items to pick-up your Cultural Access Pass:

  1. A piece of photo ID that contains your birth date;
  2. Your registration confirmation number - found on the registration confirmation page or the confirmation e-mail sent to you after you completed the online registration form; and
  3. Your Citizenship Document - the letter-sized certificate containing your name and date of citizenship (given to you at the citizenship ceremony).

Click here for instructions and directions.

What is a Citizenship Document?

A Citizenship Document is the letter-sized certificate containing the name of the new citizen and date of his/her citizenship ceremony. This document is given to every new citizen at his/her citizenship ceremony, and is the ONLY document that proves the date when a citizen was sworn in as a Canadian. It's the only way to prove eligibility for the Cultural Access Pass. Click here for a sample.

Do I need photo ID to use my pass?

Yes. You must show your photo ID every time you use your Cultural Access Pass.
